Errors that Occur Because you have not Updated a Software

Software application manufacturers, especially manufacturers of security software, such as Symantec and McAfee, release regular updates to ensure that their products are well-equipped to fight the latest security threats. Microsoft recommends that all Windows users keep this utility enabled on their computer because it helps in automatically searching, downloading, and installing any new Microsoft update required for your system to stay secure and up-to-date.

In case, there is some problem with the Automatic Update utility on your computer, errors such as the svchost error may generate on the system. You can resolve this issue by performing the following steps:

1. Open Start menu, select Run, type Services.msc.
2. In the Services management console window, double-click Automatic Updates.
3. On the Log On ensure that:
   • The Local System Account option is selected.
   • The Allow service to interact with desktop check box is clear.
4. Next, on the General tab ensure that:
   • Startup type is Automatic
   • Service Status is Started
5. Next, ensure that the above configuration information is true for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service also.
6. Close the Services window and then use the “regsvr32 <DLLname>” command to re-register the Automate Update DLL files, WUAPI.DLL WUAUENG.DLL, WUAUENG1.DLL, ATL.DLL, WUCLTUI.DLL, WUPS.DLL, WUPS2.DLL, and WUWEB.DLL on the system.
7. Next, stop the Windows Update service from the Services window and then rename the SoftwareDistribution in the %windir% folder.
8. Restart the Windows Update service.

You may also choose to disable the Automatic Update feature and choose to perform manual system updates on a regular basis.
