Special Characters

ASCII Character Sets
for AMERICAN KEYBOARD settings
Occasionally, we need to input specials characters into documents (characters like é, à, ½, ©).  If you are someone that regularly types in foreign languages, you most probably have your keyboard set to that language.  For everyone else, this is how you could insert them easily.

Example, since we live in a French province, we often have to type the french version of Montreal.

We start by typing 'Montr' when the é  is necessary, we hold one of the keys on our keyboard, using the numeric keypad on the right side of your Standard keyboard, tap 0233  The é  would pop in and we would continue typing the al.

  Give it a try >>
If your result is different, your system is set to another language.  Choose this link to visit the Canadian keyboard page.

The end result = Montréal

Don't be afraid, open your word processor and give it a try.  It really isn't that hard and it's kind of fun.

  Steps
The following method uses a standard keyboard.
The numeric keypad must be active for the following operation to work.  If the indicator light is not eliminated, tap the NUM LOCK key prior to performing the operation.
  • Hold either  key (use your left hand).
Using the numeric keypad on the right, tap the corresponding number sequence .

  • Release the  key. DO NOT HIT ENTER

Special Character Chart

If you are using a laptop
Due to the compactness of a laptop keyboard, the numeric keypad is usually located within the alpha character area of the keyboard. The numbers are normally located on the right side of the key and colored differently then the other characters.
The Fn key is usually located somewhere on the left of the keyboard and colored the same as the number keys.

  • Hold the Fn keys together (use your left hand),
Using the numeric keypad of you keyboard,  tap the corresponding number sequence including the 0.

  • Release the Fn keys. DO NOT HIT ENTER

If these don't work, try Canadian keyboard characters
