Microsoft Windows

System Tools

  System Tools
A computer must be maintained to allow for optimum performance. When you work, the computer is manipulating the bytes of your hard drive. Files are constantly being created and deleted.  If you don't keep you system tidy, it becomes confused.  A confused computer is not a good thing, strange things happen. Some problems would be odd crashes, programs not performing properly, your computer not shutting down properly, etc

Although you can purchase a wide variety of utility programs, Microsoft has included some basic maintenance programs which are discussed on this page.  If you would like to know more about each option under this folder, using the diagram below, single click on the desired Tool.

Clipboard Viewer

The clipboard viewer shows you the last selection you cut or copied.

You can save clipboard entries for future use.

Drive Converter

Drive Converter (FAT32) converts your drives from the standard File Allocation Table (FAT) to FAT32, a very efficient system for storing files on large disk drives (over 512 MB). Converting to FAT32 may create some free disk space.  This program is a throw back from the old Window 3.11 days and is rarely used with today's technology.

If you have a new computer, it is most probably already set to FAT32.  To check to see if this is the case, go to your desktop, right mouse button click on the My Computer icon, then choose Properties.  When in the System Properties, choose the Performance page tab.  There you will see what your system is set to.

Disk Cleanup

When you first open the program, it will automatically want to cleanup your C drive. If you have other drives on your system, choose which one you want cleaned up.

Disk Cleanup is designed to do just what is says.  It will offer you an easy way to clear out redundant files that have been stored in temporary directories from one place.  The description relates to the folder that is selected in the Files to delete: part of the screen.

Note, there are two other sections involved with this program which are, More Options and Settings.

More Options will allow you to remove windows components and uninstall programs.  You can get to these options from the Control Panel.

Settings has only one option in it.  Whether the computer should automatically run Disk Cleanup should you run low on space.

Disk Defragmenter

Disk Defragmenter will reorganize any files that have become fragmented.  This program is filed under the Start menu, choose Programs, Accessories, System tools.  You can defrag each hard drive individually or set the option to All Drives.

The time required to run this program is dependant on the amount of information you have on your system.  If you wish to watch the program actually shuffle the sectors, choose the Details button.

If you haven't defrag in a long time, you might want to run this program a couple of times to ensure everything was sorted properly.

You might also want to make sure all programs are closed.  This includes any that have been laid into your startup menu.  Use the close program feature to ensure only rudimentary programs are running.  These programs would be Explorer, Systray, any peripheral, firewall or Antivirus programs.

Ensure that all internet server based programs are closed and you are offline.  Things like Kazaa, Morphus, any Live monitoring programs, etc., if running, will interfere with  the defrag.

Maintenance Wizard

The Maintenance Wizard will offer you another way of setting up utility programs that will help you keep your computer working at peek performance.  Like all wizards it will ask you questions and you supply the answers.
